National Institute of Technology Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed to be University) by the Government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi on October 17, 2002.
As National Institute of Technology, the institute has a responsibility of providing high quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country. The institute offers B Tech program in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with research programs leading to M.Sc, M Tech and Ph D. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from the State of Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.
NIT Jalandhar is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The institution functions under the over all control and guidance of the Board of Governers, the Director being the executive head of the institute. Besides the Board of Governers, the other authorities of the institute are the Senate, the Finance Committee and the Building and Works Committee.
UG Programme
The admission to undergraduate programmes at the institute for the session 2007-08 will be made on the basis of the merit of AIEEE-2007 conducted by CBSE through the Central Counselling Board Constituted by MHRD, Government of India. The reservation policy will be as per the decision of the MHRD. The eligibility for admission under the home state quota is 10+2 pass in the discipline approved by AICTE from an institution located in Punjab.
Post Graduate Programme
M Tech by Research for Regular Candidates
Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology (with valid GATE Score) or Master's degree in appropriate Sciences/Humanities/Social Sciences with a first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR fellowship tenable from the current year in the relevant areas.
M Tech by Research for Internal Candidates
Facult/Technical/Scientific staff of Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar (NITJ) having teaching/industrial experience of more than two years are eligible to apply for M Tech by Research Programme. Academic qualifications are same as required in M Tech by Research for regular candidates. A valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required.
M Tech by Research for External Candidates
This programme is applicable to external faculty/staff working in organisations other than NITJ. Academic qualifications are same as required in M Tech by Research for regular candidates. A valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required. Candidates having a minimum of two years of professional experience after the qualifying degree in the appropriate discipline of the recognized institutes, R & D establishments, public utility undertakings and industrial units with well-established R & D units recognized by DST or NITJ are eligible.
M Tech by Research for Staff under Projects
The project staff working under various sponsored projects (MHRD, DST, UGC, etc.) coordinated by the institute's faculty certified by the Principal Investigator/Coordinator and having the same academic qualifications as required in "M Tech by Research for Regular Candidates" are eligible to apply for M Tech by Research provided an adequate financial support for the period of M Tech degree is ensured from project employment or other sources. A valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required.
PhD Programmes
Ph D Programmes for Regular Candidates
Master's degree in Engineering/Technology in relevant areas with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) with valid GATE score, or Master's degree in appropriate branch of Science/Humanities/Social Sciences with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) with valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NET qualified.
Ph D Programmes for Internal Candidates
Facult/Technical/Scientific staff of Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar (NITJ) having teaching/industrial experience of more than two years and possessing the same academic qualifications as that for Ph D Full Time scheme are eligible to apply for Ph D Programmes. A valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required.
Ph D Programmes for External Candidates
External Candidates specified by Industry/Institute having R & D facility recognized by DST or equivalent/NITJ with industrial expereince of two years or more and having same academic qualifications as that for "Ph D Programmes for Regular Candidates" are eligible to apply for Ph D Programmes. The valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required.
Ph D Programmes for Staff under Projects
The project staff working under the projects sponsored by MHRD/DST/UGC or some other government agency and coordinated by the institute's faculty as certified by the Principal Investigator/Coordinator and having the same academic qualifications as that for Ph D Full Time programme are eligible to apply for admission to Ph D Programme provided an adequate financial support for the period of Ph D degree is ensured from project employment or other sources. A valid GATE score of UGC/CSIR fellowship is not required.
