The National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur (the erstwhile Regional Institute of Technology) was founded in the year 1960. It is among the eight Regional Engineering Colleges established in 1960 as joint ventures between the Government of India and State Governments.

The Institute was fully taken over by the Central Government on 1st April, 2003 and renamed National Institute of Technology.

Situated on the outskirts of Jamshedpur, the Steel City of the Tatas, NIT Jamshedpur offers UG, PG and research degrees in 12 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management. 115 faculty members belonging to various branches of science, engineering and humanities streams are engaged in teaching, research and consultancy activities. With over 1350 students on the roll, the Institute boasts of a self-contained, beautiful, green residential campus of about 320 acres with all the modern amenities and support.

The Institute offers 2-year M.Tech. Course in the following disciplines:


  1. Extractive Metallurgy (Met. Engg. & Mat. Sc. Deptt.)
  2. Foundry Technology (Met. Engg. & Mat Sc. Deptt.)
  3. Power System (Electrical Engg.' Deptt.)
  4. Computer Integrated Design and Manufacturing (Mechanical Engg. deptt.)
  5. Surface Science and Engineering. (Chemistry Deptt.)

The award of the Ph.D. degree is made on the basis of satisfactory performance of a registered candidate in

  1. prescribed course work & seminar and
  2. the thesis submitted by the candidate and a final viva voce.

 

Eligibility: Candidates must possess Master Degree in Engineering (in the relevant fields) or Science or MCA or MBA or its equivalent from a recognized University with at least 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in a 10 point scale) in the qualifying examination.

 

Residential Requirement: Normally a candidate admitted to the Ph.D. program will be required to stay in the institute till he/she completes all assigned course work and submits his/her thesis. The minimum residential requirement shall, however be one year for a candidate who has completed the course work and at least a part of the research work and has been registered for the Ph.D. degree.

 

Registration: A candidate is required to give a seminar talk on the topic of his research within one year of enrolment or within one year of completion of the course work as the case may be. A candidate who has been registered for the Ph.D. program can be permitted to become non-resident on the specific recommendation of the D.S.C. provided the candidate has stayed in the Institute for a minimum period of one year. The thesis for the Ph.D. degree must, however, be submitted within the prescribed period.

 

Selection Procedure: Candidate possessing qualification as given are to be selected for admission to the program on the basis the following weightage:

  1. Overall academic performance                                  70 percent
  2. Test and Interview conducted by Department         30 percent

 

Admission Requirements for Ph.D. Programme

A sponsored scholar selected for admission shall be required at the time of joining the Institute:

  1. to submit evidence of having passed the qualifying examination and such other documents as the Institute may require.
  2. to produce certificate from the employers to the effect
    1. that he has been officially released from his duties for purpose of joining the program and has been granted the leave for the required period.
    2. that his services shall be retained with the employers.
  3. A self supporting candidate in service shall produce a release certificate from his/her employer at the time of admission.

 

Field of Specialisation:

Broad field of research in the different departments are as mentioned below:

  1. Metallurgical Engg.: Iron and steel making, Physical Metallurgy, Corrosion Engineering, Material Science, Thermodynamics, Waste Management and Utilisation.
  2. Mechanical Engg.: Solar Energy, Heat Transfer, Mechanism of Machine Theory.
  3. Department of Computer Applications: Applications of quantitative techniques / computer in various fields of Industrial Management, Business Intelligence, Supply Chain Management, ERP, EIS etc.
  4. Applied Mechanics: Fluid Mechanics & Thermal Engineering, Structural Mechanics.
  5. Electrical Engg.: Control System, Electro Magnetic Fields. Electrical Machines, Power System, Digital Relaying, Digital Instrumentation & Measurement, Modeling of Transducers & their Performance Evaluation, Process Instrumentation & Drives.
  6. Mathematics: Operational Research - Theory and Applications, Special Functions, Statistics.
  7. For the field of specialization of other departments candidate may contact respective HOD.

 

In order to meet the growing demand of software professionals in the country a three-year full time MCA programme is offered at the Institute by the department of Computer Applications. After successful completion of this course, a candidate is absorbed as software Engineer, System Analyst, System Executive, System Manager, etc.

It is a 3 year (6 semester) full time course. The students undergo a thorough class room teaching and extensive laboratory work in which they develop software in the areas like Information Technology, Business Intelligence, Decision Support System etc. During first five semesters, the students are taught subjects like Computer Organization, Data Base Management System, Computer Graphics, Computer Networking, SAD, Decision Support System, Business Intelligence, Accounting & Financial Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, ERP, Supply Chain Management, Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems, etc.

In the 6th. Semester, students do the project and thesis work in the Industry under the joint supervision of one faculty from the department and one expert from the respective industry on the live project. After the completion of the MCA programme students are recruited to reputed organizations, such as IBM, AMDOCS, TCS, SATYAM, PCS, HCL, WIPRO, HUGES, TATA STEEL, and many others.

Non-Formal B.Sc. Engineering Programme

The Institute runs a twelve semester certificate course in Mechanical and Electrical disciplines under the Non-Formal B.Sc. Engg. Education Program.

This course is fully sponsored by Tata Motors, Jamshedpur and partially by Adityapur Small Scale Industries Association (ASIA) Adityapur, Jamshedpur apart from a few other industries located in Jamshedpur.

The participants of this course are supervisory staff of the respective industries. Admission to the course is done through an open advertisement in local newspaper. Applications are invited from candidates sponsored by the industries for admission to Non-Formal B.Sc. Engg. Part time evening course. The Admission test is conducted for the sponsored candidates at the institute.
